Frequently Asked Questions
Are all license sales final?
Yes. To protect your privacy and uptime, I, Librarian does not
include a remote deactivation
feature (kill-switch). Once a license is issued, the software is fully autonomous on your
hardware.
Because we cannot remotely revoke access, all sales are final. We strongly encourage you to
run
our
software in evaluation mode and try online demo before purchasing.
Can I increase the number of users for my current license?
Absolutely. You can scale your license as your team grows. Please
contact
support for a quote to add
more users to your existing installation.
Are software upgrades included in the license?
Maintenance and security updates (e.g., version 6.0.X) are always
included.
Major feature upgrades
(e.g., version 6.1, 6.2) may require an upgrade fee, though existing license holders
receive a significant discount.
Is technical support included?
Technical support is not included in the base license price. However, online documentation
is available. For organizations that require direct assistance, dedicated email support is
available
as an annual subscription. The cost is a $6 per user (minimum $18), per year.
Is my data privacy guaranteed?
Yes. Your databases, documents, and user data never leave your server.
We
do not collect any
telemetry or software usage data. The only information we log is your server's IP address to
verify
license compliance. This process does not track what you are reading or storing.
Is an Internet connection required? How private are the features?
All core features, like storing, organizing, and searching your personal library work 100%
offline and
no library data ever leaves your server.
A yearly license requires a periodic internet connection to verify a valid expiration date.
For users who require a strictly offline or air-gapped environment, we offer a perpetual
license which
has no internet requirement for validation.
There are also optional integrations with third-party APIs (PubMed, Gemini AI, Google OCR,
etc.). If
you choose to use these features, only the specific data required for that
request (e.g., a search query or a document for OCR) is transmitted to the provider. These
features are strictly opt-in; if they are not used, no document data is ever transmitted.
Can I create multiple libraries?
Yes, you can create unlimited number of libraries.
Can I use I, Librarian on more than one server?
Each license is for a single production server. However, we allow
additional installations
for temporary testing, staging, or development environments to ensure your library remains
stable during server migrations or updates.
What happens if I don't renew my 1-year license?
Your license will expire and the software will revert to "Evaluation
Mode."
To maintain full access
to your user accounts and features, you should renew your license annually or upgrade to a
Perpetual
License.
What happens if the company goes out of business?
Your library remains yours. The I, Librarian core is a self-sufficient,
statically-compiled Linux 64-bit Go binary.
It makes use of standard system utilities (Poppler, LibreOffice) to process your files.
Because
these are the industry-standard tools for document handling, your installation is not tied
to
a proprietary cloud service. As long as you have a server that can run these common
utilities,
I, Librarian will continue to function exactly as it does today, regardless of our
company's status.
There is no "phone home" requirement to keep the software running.
How hard is it to install and maintain?
We provide a streamlined Docker-based pipeline. This eliminates
the
need for you to manually
install and configure dependencies like LibreOffice or Poppler on your host OS. If you have
Docker
installed on a 64-bit Linux server, you can have I, Librarian up and running in
minutes.
Can I run this on Windows or macOS?
Currently, we provide a native Linux 64-bit binary. While you
can
run
Docker on Windows or macOS (via Docker Desktop), we officially support and recommend
Linux-based
server environments for production use. We suggest testing your specific environment using
our
Evaluation Mode before purchasing.
If I stop using the software, can I get my PDFs out?
Yes. We believe in zero vendor lock-in. Your metadata are stored in a
single SQLite database, and your PDFs
are stored in a standard file structure on your server.
What are the hardware recommendations?

your
library size and user activity. Here are our recommended guidelines:
